Broncos nearly sweep Serpents

December 11, 2013

The Bishop Broncos basketball team’s record went to 6-2 with a 61-54 win over the visiting Mineral County Serpents Tuesday night.
The game wasn’t as tight as the score reflects; Bishop was the stronger of the two teams from the tip-off. But, like the Lady Broncos’ game, coach Ben Arcularius opted to give his bench varsity playing time and build up the depth of the Broncos squad in preparation for league action.
The Serpents got the tip-off but Andrea Musumeci swept in for the steal and Bishop was the first with points on the board.

Bishop beats Huskies

December 11, 2013

Bishop’s Lady Broncos soccer team stayed perfect for the season with a 3-1 win over the Mammoth Lady Huskies at home last Friday.
“It was a little bit one-sided,” said co-coach Cathy McKinley. “We really should have put more balls in the back of the net. But, we played hard as a team and, for the most part, kept our heads in the game.”
Bishop/Mammoth soccer games are always lively and this one was no exception. McKinley was appreciative of the fact Bronco boosters were a “great positive crowd.”

Eagles win one, lose one at KV

December 2, 2013

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles basketball teams got their first test against the Kern Valley Broncs last Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Eagles pulled out a 60-56 win; the Lady Eagles fell, 58-21.
“We were a little cold in the first half,” said Eagles coach Scott Kemp. Kern led by 4 at the half, but the Eagles came back behind impressive offensive rebounds and put-backs by Brad Greene.
Kemp acknowledged that the Broncs have “a couple of good shooters who made some amazing baskets.” But, when a team only has one shot at the basket, it’s tough to win the game.

Scott Kemp is a happy man.
The Lone Pine basketball coach was probably described as “happy” at this time last year. He had a troupe of freshmen, all more than 6 feet tall, a couple of juniors with speed and ability and the veteran senior Michael Cappello who went on to claim a Desert Mountain League MVP spot. The Golden Eagles went deep into CIF playoffs, finally falling in the quarterfinals to the eventual division champion, Rio Hondo Hares.

Lady Broncos fall to Cougars in tie-breaker

November 13, 2013

The Bishop Lady Broncos ran head long into a pride of tenacious, skilled volleyball Cougars from McFarland High Tuesday night.
The game was the first round of the CIF Central Section volleyball playoffs; Bishop lost 3-2.
“It was a great match. We were just out-played,” was coach Linda Frigerio’s simple explanation.
“They were a good team,” she said. “We were well-matched but I think we had better skills. They (the Cougars) have grit and tenacity and an unconventional style of play.”

Bishop’s legendary golfer hits another hole-in-one

November 13, 2013

Late last month, Augie Hess was at his second home, the Bishop Country Club golf course, hole 8 to be exact. He teed off and watched his golf ball veer to the left, then arc toward the flag. He and his buddies went to the green to finish out the hole. Hess assumed his ball had flown over the green; nobody could find it until someone suggested, “Look in the hole.” There it was, nestled in the cup like a little poached egg.

November 8, 2013

Seven players on Bishop’s Lady Broncos tennis team headed into the Central Valley for the CIF individual championships Friday, Nov. 1.
Of those seven, doubles partners Bronwyn Stephenson and Taylor Stoll advanced to the second round, a rarity for Bronco players.
“I have been attending individuals for quite a few years,” said coach Patty Cummings, “and rarely does a team from Bishop ever make it to the second round. It’s quite an accomplishment for Taylor and Bronwyn and I am very proud of them.”
