Lone Pine downs Bishop in Inyo County face off

In a cross-county preseason rumble, the Lone Pine volleyball team swept Bishop Tuesday.

Despite the Lady Eagles winning three straight games, the Lady Broncos made a fight out of the third game.
But in the first game, Lone Pineâ€™s hitting and serving overpowered the Lady Broncos. Serving was key for Lone Pine as the Lady Eagles were 63-65 from the service line.
The Lady Eagles came out on top, winning the first game, 25-13.
Lone Pine jumped ahead, 6-1, in the second game. Bishop fought back, cutting the Lady Eaglesâ€™ lead to 2.
But Lone Pine extended its lead to 13-6 with an 8-0 run.
Bishop again cut Lone Pinesâ€™ lead to 4.
The Lady Eagles extended their lead once again, taking a 24-14 lead, but the Lady Broncos made Lone Pine work for game point, scoring twice in a row.
Lone Pine ended the game, winning 25-16.
Lady Eagles coach Mel Joseph was pleased with his teamâ€™s intensity during the game.
â€ś(We) used aggressive serving and were stingy with (our) defense to keep the Broncos off balance,â€ť Joseph said.
In the final game, Larixta Ramirez got the Lady Eagles off to a quick start with 2 straight aces. Lone Pine used its momentum to go ahead 17-8.
The game featured several long rallies with both sides earning points. After the rallies and a few key hits by Olivia Watterson and Katie Manuelito, the Broncos cut the Lady Eagles lead to 3.
â€śWe started to get into our groove,â€ť said Bishop coach Sherri Sonke. â€śThey were more confident in that third game.â€ť
Lone Pine extended its lead to 24-16, but once again game point didnâ€™t come easy for the Eagles.
Bishop scored four times in a row, cutting the Lady Eaglesâ€™ lead to 4.
Lone Pine earned the final point by knocking the ball past the outstretched hands of Lady Broncos.
Leading the way in serving for Lone Pine were Ramirez, who was 16-16 with 6 aces, and Ariana Luque, who was 13-13 with 3 aces.
Ruth Serna led the offense with 5 kills. Eryn Sellberg also helped the offense with 12 assists.
Bishopâ€™s offense were led by Tyler McMurtrie, who had 7 kills, and Watterson, who had 4 kills. From the service line, Manuelito had 2 aces and Gabby Robertson, Jessica Biehl, McMurtrie and Watterson all served well.
Both teams are in action again soon, as Lone Pine will travel to the California City Tournament Friday and Saturday and Bishop will play against Mammoth Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at home.
