Wild kingdom

Bishop resident Craig Jackson went on a hike Jan. 24 and had what he calls “probably my favorite wildlife adventure so far” in the several months since he moved here from Southern California. Jackson hiked five miles up Arc Road in the foothills of the Sierra west of Big Pine just below Piper Peak, along the way catching sight of at least a half dozen hawks and a golden eagle near Baker Creek, and finding a huge set of antlers. But the best part, he says, was the buck he awoke while coming up and over a ridge. “He was sleeping next to a bush when I startled him and then proceeded to feed for 30 minutes as I watched from a rock about 20 yards away.”
