Bishop’s Lady Broncos softball squad had to wait over an hour to start the second game in its series with the Frazier Mountain Falcons Monday afternoon. The Falcon teams had to be rescued from Coso Junction where they were stranded following a bus breakdown.
This season’s history between the two teams has been decidedly one-sided, but the Falcons weren’t ready to roll over and play dead in this final season contest.
With Samantha Riesen on the mound, the Broncos made quick work of the top of the first with two plays from Riesen to first and a pop foul caught by Hannah Frankson at third base. Bishop got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. With 2 outs, Sabrina Barlow singled to left field and scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons delivered their answer in the second. Ellaine Shillig tripled in a run, then scored on a Maggie Gonzalez line drive single, taking the lead from the Broncos at 1-2. Bishop retired the side with no further damage.
Bronco bats got busy in the bottom of the second. Mariah Brooks started the drive with a single, Cienna Martinez followed with a single and Frankson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Haley Hersley singled on a fielder’s choice that took Brooks out at home plate.
Riesen was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, then Jordan Frankson ignited the scoring run with a single. Barlow stepped up with a big hit deep into center field that brought in a run and a double off the bat of Shelby Hess iced the cake with 2 RBI. By the final out, Bishop led 6-2.
The Falcons came back with a solo run in the top of the third. Bishop took the run away when Riesen singled in Hersley to keep the 4-point advantage at 7-3.
The Falcons got a little too close for comfort in the top of the fourth with a 2-RBI in the park homer, on Bishop fielding errors.
The Broncos came back in the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the third baseline by Barlow. A Brooks’ single brought Barlow home but the Falcons stayed 2-point close with a run in the top of the fifth.
Bishop increased its lead with 2 runs in the fifth starting when Hersley duplicated Barlow’s triple down the baseline, then scored on a sacrifice fly ball off Riesen’s bat. The Broncos defense put the plug in the Falcon’s scoring drive, then put the lid on the game in the bottom of the sixth.
The bases were loaded with Broncos when Riesen emptied the bases, then got tagged trying for an in-the-park homerun. to give Bishop the 13-6 lead.
The top of the seventh went down three-up-three-down.
“Frazier played a great game,” said Bishop coach Brad Rockwell. “They really are a good pitcher away from being a very good team.
“I thought it was a good test for the team because it made them play a complete game,” he said in reference to the past series of mercy-rule shortened games. “With our young team, game experience at the varsity level is the most important thing right now. It is great to get a win, but team work and overcoming adversity can only be learned on the field against a quality opponent.”
Bishop traveled to Kern Valley yesterday and will host the Broncs tomorrow afternoon.
