Bronco bats weren’t exactly blazing, but Bishop still gets the win

May 1, 2014

Justin Hollowell logged 11 strikeouts in Bishop win over the Frazier Falcons.

The Bishop Broncos took down the Frazier Falcons for the third time this season in their home turf match up Monday afternoon.
The game was a make-up for a game scheduled for Friday, but bad weather kept the Falcons at home. Monday’s game was delayed due to a Frazier bus breakdown.
The Falcons’ were last year’s High Desert League baseball champions but lost players to graduation; 2014 is the team’s rebuilding year. Bishop coach Tim Reid predicts a strong Falcon rivalry over the coming years. The Broncos were exposed to some of that potential on Monday but still got the 5-3 win in seven.
Justin Hollowell started on the mound and “threw a great game,” said Reid. Hollowell went the distance with 11 strikeouts and only 1 walk.
The ignited Bronco bats from last week’s rout of the Falcons had cooled considerably by Monday. Bishop logged only 4 hits, winning the game at the expense of pitcher Art Smith’s walks and hit-by-pitches.
The Falcons struck in the top of the first. With one out, Smith singled and Chris Richards followed with a ground rule double that hopped over the center field fence. Alex Ohyshko doubled Smith home. With two runners on base, Bishop short stop Tony Russell caught a pop fly and relayed the ball to first baseman Jake Traynor for the double play.
With two outs, Colton Riesen walked, Carl Olsen and Daniel Klemencic were both hit by pitches to load the bases, but the Falcons got out of that jam with a strikeout.
Frazier extended its lead to 0-2 in the second. With one out and the bases loaded, Alex Oman hit a sacrifice fly into the hands of third baseman Josh DeMoss, for the second Falcon run.
By the bottom of the second, the Broncos were more settled into their rhythm. With one out, Traynor doubled into center field and was waived to third on a Falcon fielding error. Jeremy Fie followed with a single to score Traynor. DeMoss singled and Anthony Martinez brought Fie home with the help of another Falcon error. By the final out, the score was tied 2-2.
Two strikeouts and a pop out to Martinez ended the top of the third for the Falcons.
The bottom of the third won the game for Bishop, with a lot of help from the Frazier defense. Two HBPs and a walk loaded the bases with Broncos, Klemencic sacrificed a run home on a fielder’s choice and 2 runs were scored on errors to give Bishop a 5-2 edge.
Hollowell retired the top of the fourth with 2 strikeouts and Fie pulled down a pop fly. Bishop went down in three at-bats to end the fourth.
The Falcons threatened in the top of the fifth with two runners on and no outs. Russell scooped up a grounder to take out a runner at first, then did an encore performance with the bases loaded for the second out, giving up the run. Hollowell shut the Falcons down with the final strikeout. The Falcons had narrowed Bishop’s lead to 5-3, but that’s all the Broncos needed as the final two innings played out.
Bishop hosts the High Desert League leader Kern Valley Broncs tomorrow afternoon.
