Geek Girl: Endings and Beginnings

August 23, 2014

Without further ado, this week in the geek world …At the Edinburgh International Literary Festival, author George R.R. Martin revealed that some fans have correctly guessed the ending to his “A Song of Ice and Fire”(Game of Thrones)series. I’m pretty sure this means that my theory that the entire saga is a dream of Bob Newhart’s will prove totally correct … For those of you who are Harry Potter fans, JK Rowling has released new info on about periphery character Celestina Warbeck, a jazz singer popular with Mrs. Weasley’s age group. In addition to reading new biographical information, you can listen to Celestina’s song “You Stole My Cauldron But You Can’t Have My Heart.” In an amazing coincidence (cough-synergy-cough), the song is performed at Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park. is an interactive web-site that has a lot of supplemental material written by Rowling. I can’t get the interactive part to work. Apparently other people can get the website to work, so if you like Harry Potter and can work a mouse, check it out …
HBO’s vampire show “True Blood” will meet the true death on Sunday. After teasing his demise all season long, the show has one hour left to kill Bill. Will Bill die? Probably not since I am just not that lucky. After having great fun for years at the expense of the character, the writers still expect us to root for Bill, or, at the very least, not actively cheer on his death. I’m afraid that ship sailed around the time he became the dorkiest, most megalomaniacal god of all time. That’s right: they turned him into a deity for like two episodes. After sticking with the show for so long, I’ll watch the fina-le, but if Bill lives to foul everything up another day, I am punching something. I seriously will. I should probably take the pictures off the wall before the episode starts …
On Saturday, the Season 8 premiere of “Dr. Who” will air on BBC America. Peter Capaldi will debut as the newest incarnation of The Doctor. For those of you who don’t know, “Dr. Who” is a long running British sci-fi series. It’s very popular and has spawned countless fan clubs, conventions, costumes and memorabilia. In other terms, it’s like the British version of Harry Potter …
At the 2014 Pokémon World Championships in Washington, D.C., Nintendo has released more information about the upcoming games Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Based upon the third-generation Gameboy Advance games, Ruby and Sapphire, the new games will be updated for the Nintendo 3DS con-sole and will follow the old story but will include Mega Evolutions. Mega Evolutions were introduced last year in Pokémon X and Y and are basically a way to temporarily change the form of a fully-developed Pokémon. Most of the Mega Pokémon designs are pretty cool. The new Mega Evolutions for the upcoming games will now include first-generation Pokémon Slowbro and fifth-generation Pokémon Audino. If you played Ruby and Sapphire back in the day, you might want to check out Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The 3D graphics are amazing, and Mega Evolution is worth checking out. That is if you can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on the 3D console and the accompanying game. If you do, I also have an amazing business oppor-tunity for you … Until next time, Geekers!
