Born in Los Angeles on Feb. 16, 1938, Carol died at home in Laguna Woods on Sept. 21, 2010. She was 72.
Carol was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. After raising sons Donald and Edward, Jr. in Big Pine, Carol and Edward Sr. lived a few years in Bishop, then moved to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, initially brought there by contracting work on the Mauna Kea Hotel. Carol and Ed fell in love with small-town Hawaiian living and lived there until returning to the mainland 10 years ago to be closer to family. Settling in Orange County was a compromise between the Hawaiian trade winds and the lovely Owens Valley summer heat, but Carol’s heart was always in Hawaii.
She had fond memories of the Owens Valley that included family and friends, skiing, fishing, camping and playing in the river. Carol was brought by her family to the Sierra from early childhood and spent many a day fly fishing the upper Owens River. Her love of adventure was shared by her loving husband, and together they shared a unique bond through 50 years, many of them doing simple things like family wooding and sliding behind trucks on inner-tubes on snowy days in Big Pine. She worked for many years as an observing assistant at Cal-Tech, and many times taught aspiring astronomers what she herself held no degree in.
Her intellect was equally matched by her wit, which was born of an Irish family love of humor. Her laugh will be especially missed.
Carol leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Edward; son, Donald, and grandson, Samuel; son, Edward, Jr., and grandchildren, Daniel and Ellie; sisters, May Crossley and Rosilinda Roberts, PhD; sisters-in-law, Dorena, Hazel and Claire; and numerous nieces and nephews.
