Inyo County Sheriff’s Office offers fraud alert

Staff Writer

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls regarding compromised bankcards. Preliminary investigations indicate that skimmer(s) could be the cause. For those who don’t know, a skimmer is a method used by criminals to capture data from the magnetic strip on the back of an ATM card. Devices used are extremely small and are often fastened in close proximity to, or over the top of the ATM's factory-installed card reader. Reports that we have received indicate that the cards were compromised during the month of June – mostly at gas stations. This investigation is on-going. Please exercise caution when using bankcards, check your balances regularly and contact the sheriff’s office at (760) 878-0383 to file a report.
